Types of DOT Audits and What to Expect
The FMCSA conducts several types of audits and reviews, each with different scopes and consequences. Understanding what you're facing is the first step to a successful outcome.
New Entrant Safety Audits are required for all new motor carriers within the first 18 months of operation. This audit verifies that you have adequate safety management controls in place. Failing a new entrant audit can result in revocation of your operating authority.
Compliance Reviews are comprehensive examinations of your entire operation, covering driver qualification, hours of service, vehicle maintenance, drug and alcohol testing, and insurance requirements. These can result in proposed safety ratings of Satisfactory, Conditional, or Unsatisfactory.
Focused Investigations target specific areas of concern, often triggered by crash data, complaint investigations, or elevated CSA scores. These are narrower in scope but can escalate to a full compliance review if problems are found.

After the Audit: Corrective Action and Follow-Up
If an audit reveals any deficiencies, SELAM develops and implements a corrective action plan to address every finding. We work with FMCSA to demonstrate your commitment to compliance and, when applicable, pursue safety rating upgrades from Conditional to Satisfactory.

What triggers a DOT compliance review?
Compliance reviews can be triggered by elevated CSA scores, crash investigations, complaints filed against your company, random selection, or as a follow-up to a previous audit. New carriers automatically receive a new entrant safety audit within 18 months of starting operations.
What documents will a DOT auditor want to see?
Auditors typically review driver qualification files, hours of service records, vehicle maintenance and inspection records, drug and alcohol testing program records, insurance documentation, and company safety policies. SELAM keeps all of these audit-ready at all times.
Can a DOT audit shut down my business?
