This Audit Decides If You Keep Your DOT Number
Every new carrier spends its first 18 months in FMCSA’s New Entrant Safety Assurance Program. Property carriers get a safety audit within 12 months of starting operations, usually after at least 3 months on the road.
Some mistakes mean automatic failure
- No drug and alcohol testing program, or no random testing
- Using a driver without a valid CDL, or one who is disqualified or medically unqualified
- Operating without the required insurance
- Not requiring drivers to keep hours-of-service records
- Using a truck that has not had its periodic (annual) inspection
Fail, and FMCSA gives you 60 days to fix it (45 days for passenger and hazmat carriers). Miss that deadline and your registration is revoked and your trucks are placed out of service.
We set it up right from the start, so none of this becomes your problem.

New Entrant Audit Questions
What is the FMCSA New Entrant Audit?
Every new motor carrier with a USDOT number spends its first 18 months in FMCSA’s New Entrant Safety Assurance Program. During that time FMCSA runs a safety audit to check that you have basic safety management controls in place: driver qualification files, drug and alcohol testing, hours-of-service records, vehicle maintenance records and insurance.
When will my New Entrant Audit happen?
Federal law requires the safety audit within 12 months after a property carrier begins operations (120 days for passenger carriers). FMCSA usually waits until you have at least 3 months of records. The best time to get your files ready is before they contact you.
What causes an automatic failure?
FMCSA lists 16 violations that fail the audit automatically. The most common are: no drug and alcohol testing program or no random testing, using a driver without a valid CDL or who is medically unqualified, operating without the required insurance, not requiring hours-of-service records, and using a vehicle that has not had its periodic inspection.
What happens if I fail the audit?
FMCSA sends you a notice. Most property carriers then have 60 days to correct the problems (45 days for passenger and hazmat carriers). If the corrections are not made in time, the USDOT registration is revoked and operations are placed out of service.
What do I have to do?
Very little. Leave your phone number, answer our call and send the documents you already have. We organize and review everything and tell you exactly what is missing.
Does SELAM guarantee I will pass?
No. We help you organize and review the documents for your audit, but compliance preparation services do not guarantee an audit outcome. Final determinations are made by the applicable regulatory authority.
Can you help me in Amharic or Tigrinya?
Yes. Our team supports carriers in English, Amharic and Tigrinya.
