How long does it take to set up a new trucking company?
With SELAM, the typical setup takes about 2 weeks from start to being fully operational. Some steps like operating authority processing can take longer on the FMCSA side, but we file everything as quickly as possible and track the status for you.
Do I still need an MC number?
No. FMCSA began retiring separate MC numbers on October 1, 2025; new carriers register under a single USDOT number with operating authority attached. If you have an existing MC number it still identifies your authority. SELAM files USDOT registration, authority, BOC-3 and UCR for you.
What insurance do I need to start a trucking company?
At minimum, you need primary liability insurance ($750,000 for general freight, $1,000,000 for hazmat), cargo insurance, and physical damage coverage for your equipment. SELAM provides a detailed insurance guide and can connect you with insurance providers experienced in the trucking industry.
What happens during the new entrant safety audit?
