01

What is Form 2290 and Who Needs to File?

IRS Form 2290 is the Heavy Highway Vehicle Use Tax Return, required for all highway motor vehicles with a taxable gross weight of 55,000 pounds or more. If you operate a heavy truck on public highways, you must file Form 2290 annually and pay the associated tax.

The filing deadline is August 31 for vehicles used during July (the first month of the tax period). For vehicles first used after July, the form is due by the last day of the month following the month of first use. New carriers purchasing or putting a heavy vehicle into service must file within the required timeframe to avoid penalties.

The stamped Schedule 1 you receive after filing is essential — you need it to register your vehicle with the state, and you may be asked to present it during roadside inspections. Without a current Schedule 1, you cannot legally operate your heavy vehicle.

Our Streamlined 2290 Filing Process

Filing Form 2290 with SELAM is fast and simple. Provide us with your EIN (Employer Identification Number), VIN for each vehicle, and the taxable gross weight of each vehicle. We handle everything else.

We calculate the correct tax amount based on your vehicle's weight classification, apply any credits for suspended vehicles or partial-year use, and e-file directly with the IRS. In most cases, you'll receive your watermarked Schedule 1 the same day — sometimes within hours.

If you need an EIN, we can help you apply for one. If you've acquired new vehicles mid-year, we calculate the pro-rated tax amount. And if you've sold or destroyed a vehicle, we process the appropriate credits and amendments.

03

Avoiding 2290 Penalties and Common Mistakes

Late filing penalties for Form 2290 are steep: 4.5% of the total tax due per month, up to 5 months, plus interest. For a typical heavy truck with a tax of $550, that's nearly $125 in penalties for just one month late.

Common mistakes we prevent include using incorrect weight classifications, filing with the wrong EIN, miscalculating credits for suspended vehicles, and missing the filing deadline for newly acquired vehicles. Our team has filed thousands of 2290 forms and catches errors before they become costly problems.
